Welcome to Gray Stone’s Guidance Services page! In addition to helping students plan for and apply to college, Mrs. Crum and Mr. Miller strive to serve our school community in a variety of ways. Counseling. We encourage students to come to us for counseling when they are dealing with academic, personal, or social problems. This can be done by appointment or spontaneously if a student is in crisis. Parents, teachers and administrators may also refer students to us for voluntary counseling if they are worried about students. Advising. We serve as advisors to students as they choose their yearly class schedules and help them select courses that support their post high school goals. During Gray Stone’s “Drop/Add” period at the beginning of the school year, we approve and facilitate course changes. Another important job for us is advising students transferring into or out of Gray Stone as upperclassmen. We make sure that incoming students and families understand Gray Stone’s unique graduation requirements, and we provide the necessary paperwork for students seeking to transition from Gray Stone to Stanly Community College’s Adult High School Diploma program. Facilitating. As counselors, we frequently serve as informal mediators between students or between students and teachers as we seek to find solutions that are acceptable to all parties. We are also responsible for scheduling and facilitating parent-teacher conferences. Advertising Student Opportunities. Students should be sure to check their Gray Stone email accounts frequently as we publicize various summer and out-of-school opportunities such as essay contests, internships, camps, and leadership programs, etc, via email. We support students’ applications for these opportunities by providing transcripts and references when necessary. Providing Constructive Feedback. We are happy to offer feedback on students’ resumes and college applications. We especially encourage students wishing to prepare for job, college or scholarship interviews to contact us to schedule mock interviews for practice. Referrals. Upon request, we provide families with a range of referrals and resources for outside therapy. |
