Here at Gray Stone, Ms. Crum provides a comprehensive program of college preparatory counseling to students beginning in the 9th grade. She is also available to talk with students struggling with personal, social and academic problems. She states, “I encourage students to approach high school as an opportunity to develop their talents inside and outside of the classroom, through school work, service and extracurricular activities. At the same time, students need to examine their own values, personalities, and natural strengths. Choosing a college and a career path should be about finding the right fit.”

Ms. Crum lives in Charlotte with her husband Mark and her dog Roxy. This is her third year working at Gray Stone.

Richard Miller

Sara Leonard

Director of Student Services

B.S. University of North Carolina at Charlotte

Mrs. Leonard serves administratively as the Student Services Director and Testing Coordinator at Gray Stone. After graduating from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 1998 with a BS in Special Education, she taught students with varying disabilities for eight years before coming to Gray Stone. Mrs. Leonard came to Gray Stone in 2005 and enjoys the different challenges that have been faced and overcome that have made this school more successful. Her background of being the classroom teacher is very helpful when dealing with parents and students. As the testing coordinator Mrs. Leonard handles all of our AP Exams as well as EOC testing which is mandated by the state. Mrs. Leonard loves the high expectations of Gray Stone and to see students come back and let us know how well prepared for college they really were. Mrs. Leonard resides in Mt. Pleasant with her husband and four children. When not at school you will most likely find Mrs. Leonard at a gym or ball field watching one of her children or spending time at the beach.

Sherri Sherrill

Registrar

Mrs. Sherrill, has been part of Gray Stone’s administrative staff since 2004, serving as Registrar and
NC Wise Coordinator. She is a native of New London, NC, where she lives with her husband Stacy and their two children, Hunter (15) and Hannah (11). Her hobbies include commercial art and design, painting, and photography. She has a love for the beach, being outdoors and making memories with family and friends. Mrs. Sherrill believes in the creative power behind the educational process and hopes that her experiences with the students at Gray Stone will help lay foundations and make a difference in their lives.

Shannon Lisk

A.A. Art Institute of Charlotte

Mrs. Lisk manages the front office of the school and joined the Gray Stone staff in 2005.  “The students and staff here are super which makes any busy day easy to handle.  I’m very proud to be a part of this school.  Working in such a powerful learning environment has inspired me to better myself by furthering my own education.”  Mrs. Lisk is a native of Albemarle and resides there with her husband, two young kids, and four dogs.  She enjoys art and painting, running, and animal rescue.

Marilyn Kinsey

Administration  |  Executive Assistant to CAO

B.S. Atlantic Christian College (1977)
M.Ed. University of North Carolina at Greensboro (1978)

Mrs. Kinsey serves the school by working with Mrs. Nance on public relations, preparing reports, and assisting with scholarships and contests. She is also responsible for the school yearbook. She began teaching in 1979 and has been an integral part of the establishment of Gray Stone. Her "behind the scenes" work has been part of what has made Gray Stone what it is today.

"In my fifth year of teaching high school art, I moved with my husband to Brazil, and later to Indiana before returning to NC with our two children; both are Gray Stone graduates as well as UNC Tar Heels. I agreed in 2000 to help Mrs. Nance start the school, even though we had never met. After eight years as a board member and resident volunteer, I came on staff in 2008. A new high school has to create everything, sometimes in a hurry. I designed a mascot image and the school seal when there were deadlines (Mrs. Nance knows my degree is in art). Many of you know me as “the yearbook lady” who likes to keep secrets, a role I still relish. Each year is special, and memories are preserved in yearbooks. I also write and archive Gray Stone newspaper articles and sponsor the annual Talent Show. Seniors see me often as we prepare for graduation and meet about portraits, service projects, cap and gown orders, diplomas, honors, etc. I am the detail person.”

He then taught and retired after 30 years from Albemarle High School. This will be his 9th year as part of the adjunct faculty at Gray Stone Day School and this year he will teach AP Chemistry, Chemistry, as well as Physics. He concludes his biography saying: “I have been very fortunate to have taught many wonderful students over my long teaching career and the Gray Stone students have always been a cut above the students from the other schools in many ways. Terry Burleson

English Language  |  Adjunct Instructor

B.A. Pfeiffer College
M.Ed. University of North Carolina at Greensboro

After teaching thirty years in the English Department of Albemarle High School, I chose to come to Gray Stone and work part time. Presently, I am teaching elective classes, including mythology, Bible Literature, creative writing , and speaking.  I am constantly telling parents and students that this school’s environment fosters intellectual learning, development of leadership skills, and exposure to community service. I wouldn’t choose to be anywhere else, even after eight years here. Every day is an exciting adventure interacting with students who want to learn.

I graduated from Pfeiffer College in 1971 and then earned my M.Ed. in Education at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1975. I have been married to Ronnie for forty years. We live on a farm in the Richfield area with my husband and son working crops in five different counties. The family also runs Rolling Hills Cotton Gin. I, on the other hand, spend my time teaching, growing roses, and playing with my three grandchildren. Our daughter is married to a former student of mine who recently made Lt. Col. In the Air Force. They are presently serving in San Angelo, Texas.

Education has and always will be an important part of who I am. The love of learning was instilled in me by my father, who is a retired Methodist minister. One of my duties as a teacher is to try to instill this in my students by setting a good example for them. If I can achieve this, then my job as a teacher has been successful.

“Only the curious will learn and only the resolute overcome the obstacles to learning. The quest quotient has always excited me more than the intelligence quotient.” –Eugene S. Wilson

It seems somewhat difficult for me to believe, but this school year marks my 24th year as an educator. After earning a Bachelor of Science degree from Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan, I moved from my hometown of Bad Axe, Michigan (in the tip of the “Thumb”) to North Carolina where I began my teaching career at West Montgomery High School. A few years later, I earned a Master of Education degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. I am currently in my eighth year at Gray Stone Day School. I have been married to my husband Eric for almost nineteen years and we have two daughters. Lea is currently a junior at Gray Stone, and Shannon is in the eighth grade at Park Ridge. In addition to teaching, I have coached high school volleyball for nineteen years. Because of the extraordinary faculty, high expectations for students, and an administration that respects and values the teachers, I am grateful and proud to be a part of Gray Stone Day School.

Heather Ferguson

Natural Sciences  |  Instructor

B.S. Western Carolina University (1991)

"Creating a new theory is not like destroying an old barn and erecting a skyscraper in its place. It is rather like climbing a mountain, gaining new and wider views, discovering unexpected connections between our starting points and its rich environment. But the point from which we started out still exists and can be seen, although it appears smaller and forms a tiny part of our broad view gained by the mastery of the obstacles on our adventurous way up." -- Albert Einstein, The Evolution of Physics.

After making the decision in high school to teach biology, I completed my BS, Ed. Biology degree at Western Carolina University in 1991. For the past 20 years I have taught at North Stanly High School where my roles included teacher, coach, mentor, and department head. My husband, Terry, and I have been married for 15 years and together we enjoy camping, hiking, kayaking, gardening, and caring for our seven dogs. Additionally, I have been a member of the Challenge Staff at Rock Creek Park for 24 years where my love of outdoor activities has grown to include rafting and rappelling. My most adventurous outdoor endeavor has been skydiving! Gray Stone Day School succeeds by setting academic excellence and personal growth as priorities, consequently fostering an educational atmosphere that is as refreshing as it is challenging. I am genuinely excited and humbly honored to be a Gray Stone Knight!

I had three children at the school and they were being challenged academically, competing successfully on a number of athletic teams, and making lifelong friends,” Harrington stated. Mr. Harrington is the men’s basketball and baseball coach in addition to being the faculty advisor for Fellowship of Christian Athletes. “I enjoy working with students that are capable of excellence in the classroom as well as on an athletic field,” he stated. Andrew Hodges

English Language  |  Instructor

B.A. Providence College, RI
M.A. University of York, U.K.

Short version:

Language is powerful!

Long version:

In turning to face the world that lies beyond high school, students can have no greater ally at their side than effective communication skills. Other abilities naturally flourish in the company of competent reading, writing, speaking, and listening; every skill becomes easier to master when we can readily access, apply, and contribute to the understanding of others. Indeed, possibilities for achievement in almost any field largely rest in our capacity to participate fluently, and on terms of our own choosing, in that vast and complex exchange.

The humanities courses that I teach at Gray Stone offer opportunities to develop these skills with rigorous scholarship centered around some of the most beautiful, intense, captivating, and influential literature on the planet. I feel fortunate to have found such a calling and such a school, and, in the hope that they might find such feelings contagious, attempt to share my joy for learning and for teaching with the students.

Gregg McCollister

Mathematics  |  Instructor

B.A. Pfeiffer University

After 25 plus years of a successful career in the business world, Mr. McCollister decided to retire and start another fulfilling and rewarding career. As both of his parents were educators, he observed throughout their careers the belief and dedication they had towards the education field. Inspired by this, he felt he could use his experience in sales, management, accounting, and business ownership to follow in their footsteps and help educate the youth of today.

Gray Stone has been the perfect solution for his goals by allowing him the independence of preparing students for higher education through highly challenging courses while developing a strong character necessary for future responsibility. Mr. McCollister has thoroughly enjoyed his “second career” and is learning each and every day from his students. This year will be Mr. McCollister’s 10th year in the education field and the 7th year teaching mathematics at Gray Stone.

Mr. McCollister also serves as the head Golf Coach and the head Men’s and Women’s Swim Coach.

While he enjoys most all sports, he spends most of his free time “hitting the road” on his bicycle, camping, playing golf and spending time with his family.
